Bespoke Gate Hinges supplied to Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Farm Project (CVOW)

Over 2,000 SeaSafe Gate Hinges were supplied to Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, the first offshore wind farm installed in federal waters, generating enough renewable energy to power up to 660,000 homes.

The Project

Operated by Dominion Energy, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind is located approximately 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. When complete, the project will comprise 176 offshore wind turbines, delivering large-scale renewable energy to the US grid.
For a development of this scale, safe and reliable access systems are critical. Gatemaster Offshore was selected to supply our purpose-engineered SeaSafe Cargo Gate Hinges alongside a bespoke intermediate gate lock closer. Each product was developed to meet the demanding conditions of the offshore environment while ensuring safe, controlled access for personnel working at height.

The Process

As specialists in offshore access hardware, we worked closely with project stakeholders to understand the operational requirements and environmental challenges faced on each turbine platform.
Our in-house engineering team developed a bespoke intermediate lock closer specifically for this project. Designed for installation on turbine resting platforms, the unit needed to be more compact, stronger, and robust enough to perform reliably within the splash zone. Every component was engineered to deliver high corrosion resistance and long-term mechanical performance in a highly aggressive marine environment.
In total, Gatemaster Offshore supplied:
  • 1,584 external SeaSafe gate hinges
  • 528 internal gate hinges
  • 176 bespoke intermediate lock closers, one for each turbine
Each component was manufactured from high-grade stainless steel and engineered to provide controlled self-closing performance, helping to mitigate risk in high-wind offshore conditions.

The Solution

With a proven track record in offshore wind, we deliver reliable solutions that are engineered to last. At CVOW, our bespoke hardware ensures safe, dependable access across all 176 turbines, supporting operational safety throughout the lifecycle of the asset.
By combining technical expertise with a collaborative, engineering-led approach, we developed a solution tailored precisely to project requirements. The result is safe access hardware built to defy the elements, reduce maintenance demands, and protect personnel working offshore.
